Abstract

This study examines the impact of AI technology platforms on the development of cognitive depth among university students. Traditional lecture-based teaching methods often result in superficial learning, limiting students’ ability to apply knowledge critically and creatively. AI platforms, such as ChatGPT and other digital tools, offer a transformative approach by providing adaptive learning experiences, personalized feedback, and interactive engagement. This study used a quasi-experimental design with two groups of graduate students at King Khalid University: one trained using AI platforms and the other through traditional methods. A cognitive depth test was administered to assess learning outcomes across four levels: recall, application of concepts, strategic thinking, and extended thinking. The results revealed a statistically significant improvement in cognitive depth among students who used AI platforms, demonstrating their effectiveness in promoting deep understanding and engagement. The results highlight the role of AI in transforming education towards interactive and personalized learning, and equipping students with critical thinking, problem-solving, and innovation skills. This study emphasizes the need to integrate AI into university curricula and train teachers on AIbased teaching methodologies. Future research should explore the role of AI in developing digital intelligence skills and enhancing domain-specific knowledge across disciplines.
